Family day out...
I have to say today has been a wonderful day, we had a great family day. We made drills facing East - West this goes with the fall of the ground. If we made them North - South and it rained the rain would lodge in the drills.
John dug a bed and he set two rows of onions. They were set approximately 2 inches into the ground and 6 inches apart. These were set at the south end of the garden.
Mairead and Patrick set the British Queens and Pat and myself set the Duke of York. We decided that there could be a quick way of doing it and having fun doing it or it could be hard and no fun.... Patrick and his father got two broken handles of forks, these handles are about 1.5 inches thick. They made the holes for the seed potatoe and Mairead and myself put the seed potatoe in and closed it. They were set about 6 inches deep and 1 foot apart. While we were setting the potatoes we came across hundreds of worms...they were everywhere, i was very surprised considering the field, it is a favourite of the ducks.
Today served two purposes:
1. Got the family away from the tv and out into the garden.
2. Showed the younger generation how to grow your own and they got fresh air while they were at it.
Everyone had great fun working in the garden, so much so that we will be setting all the rest of the veg as a family too....
I am hoping to make some hoopes for closhes and cover the potatoes and onions as there is supposed to be bad weather on the way again...
